What is our university like?

Find out about our campus atmosphere, locations and general environment.

Background

Our University has around 10,000 students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.

We are a city university, which means our facilities are spread across the city.

Bangor is a small friendly city, set in a steep sided valley. Our main university building is called Main Arts, and is in upper Bangor, overlooking the city and a stretch of north Wales coast. It includes our main library. The campus in upper Bangor is often called the College Road campus. Many of our Student Services are there, along with several buildings with lecture rooms, group work spaces and computer rooms. There are also specialist spaces such as our Moot Court and Film and Music studios.

We also have several buildings in lower Bangor, close to the city centre. Teaching spaces in Lower Bangor include practical laboratories, lecture rooms and computer rooms.

Bangor University has two University Halls villages; St Mary’s Village and the Ffriddoedd Village, one atop each side of the valley. The university gym and outdoor sports fields are at the Ffriddoedd Village, along with Bar Uno the student bar. There are laundrette facilities at both villages. Public buses pass the Ffriddoedd Village, but not St Mary’s Village.

We also have a campus in the town of Menai Bridge on Anglesey, where many of our Ocean Science related classes are taught, and some of our Nursing students study at our Wrexham Campus.

You can see our campus map here https://www.bangor.ac.uk/campusmap.

How could this affect me?

The campus is bigger and more spread out than you might be used to at School or College. Getting lost is common for new students and when timetables change. Becoming familiar with key buildings and locations may help you to prepare.

You can find information about key locations in the Locations area of this toolkit.

What to do next?

Use the Locations section of this website to find out more about key locations.

Practical tips

Each building’s Location page includes:

  • Photo of the building,
  • Information about what happens in that building,
  • Link to campus map.
  • dropped pin and What3Words location for the building entrance.

The information provided on the Location page should enable you to use a service such as Google Street View to see more of the surrounding area, and plan a route to the location.

Questions to think about

How will I get from my accommodation to my classes?

How will I get to the computer room or Library?

Which tools can I use to help me plan this? E.g. Google maps and Street View, our Campus map etc.
