What support is available?

An introduction to support available at Bangor University.

Background

The Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service at Bangor provides support, information and guidance for disabled students at Bangor University.

We have three teams of specialist advisers:

  • Mental Health Advisers.
  • Specific Learning Difference (SpLD) Advisers: e.g. dyslexia, ADHD.
  • Disability Advisers: e.g. autism, sensory impairment, long term health conditions, mobility impairments.

Support is tailored to each individual, via our Personal Learning Support Plan (PLSP) system. PLSPs are similar to Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and an EHCP, but are specific to your time at Bangor University. Your PLSP might include things like:

  • Exam or Assessment adjustments (e.g. extra time, use of a PC, etc.),
  • Access to lecture slides in advance,
  • Lecture recordings,
  • Advice on prioritising reading lists,
  • Adjustments in Halls (e.g. accessible adapted rooms, quiet block).

In other areas of the University, students can seek advice and guidance from:

  • The Study Skills service who provide support for students to enhance their study skills, and get the best out of our digital tools, software and virtual learning environment (Blackboard).
  • Their Personal Tutor, who can help with academic related queries, as well as more general questions.
  • Students in Bangor University Halls will also have a Residential Mentor, who will live in a University Hall close by and is available to help with any issues that affect your wellbeing in Halls.

How could this affect me?

Getting used to life as a University student can be challenging for anyone, so it is useful to know that support, information and resources are available to help. Talking to us about the support available, any concerns you have, and asking us questions might help you decide whether you want to study with us, and ensure you have the best possible university experience if you do.
